St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Mini Top Hat With Free Template

St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Mini Top Hat With Free Template

I’m quite surprised that Andrea has made a bazillion of these mini top hats but hasn’t ever crafted a green one for St. Patty’s Day. Maybe she is mini top hatted out? Either way, I took this as my queue to whip up a little St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Mini Top Hat for the Gracie girl (yes we’re those type of pet owners). Guess what? I’m actually less embarrassed about the fact that I dress up my dog than I am to admit that I had never actually used Andrea’s ever popular mini top hat template! Luckily I found it quite easy to understand– As in Andrea didn’t have to hover over me while I created it…. The hardest part about this craft was photographing a black dog in direct sunlight! If you want to create a little leprechaun hat for yourself, kids, dogs ect. I suggest you start by downloading the template from scribd and then wander over to Andrea’s mini-top hat blog post from New Years. It has nice instructions as well as a better picture of Gracie in a pink mini top...

Most Memorable DIY and Craft Projects of 2011

It seems like just yesterday we were steadily producing our once weekly internet show (Craft-Tastic LIVE) and then BLAM out of nowhere we’re buying a home, laying down laminate, setting up a dedicated craft studio and starting a new blog…. Just 6ish months later Hand MAKE My Day has already racked up 125 blog posts and over 100 unique DIY /craft projects! Don’t worry we’ve whittled it down to our top ten most memorable projects with plenty of visual candy for you ADD creative people (photos have links to corresponding blog posts). 1) The back breaker award. Floating stairs refinish! Cliff spent weeks tediously pulling out hundreds of carpet nails, sanding and sanding and more sanding, then staining. The hard work really paid off! Now we just need a bannister….. 2) The most unlikely popular craft. Paint chip address cards. WOW….. Who knew the entire internet would weigh in on the controversy of paint chip crafting and polarize me as the evil paint chip craft ring leader? 3) Project that made people go “Huh?” Our indoor swing. My mom is still asking what possessed us to hang a swing inside. Our answer; “Because it’s rad!” 4) Favorite craft. Giant Paint Chip Lite Brite Christmas Tree. There’s something about playing with giant Lite Brite that just makes Christmas better. 5) Best up-cycle. The stereo cabinet turned mini shoe closet. Maybe it’s because I scored the stereo cabinet for free and proved to Cliff that it would be put to good use. 6) Favorite creative technique. Ok, I’m patting myself on the back for figuring out how to make the perfect...

Mini Top Hat Craft and Free Template

Last year on one of our last 2010 episodes of Craft-Tastic LIVE I demonstrated how to create a cute mini top hat using a free template that I designed. Seeing that this craft was popular I though it best to put instructions and link to the free mini top hat template right here in our new bloggie home! ┬áIf you have about 8 minutes and want a little giggle check out my original video demonstration of this mini top hat. Yes those are vintage eyeglasses ;) If you would rather read the instructions than stare at my face/hands for 8 minutes then check out the instructions below. I also included a few tricks that I didn’t discuss in the video demonstration. What you’ll need Mini top hat template downloaded and printed. You will need a Scribd account to download. 8.5 sheet of stiff fabric, foam sheet, card stock or any other stiffish material. Hot glue gun and hot glue Scissors Craft knife Embellishments such as ribbon, feathers, rhinestones ect. Wire headband or thin plastic headband. Even a big clip would work.Instructions Print and cut out pieces. (you have to sign up with Scribd to download) You should have two pieces total. Trace pattern onto material of choice and cut out. Keep in mind it needs to be somewhat stiff material. I found card-stock to work quite nicely but also like the look of foam. Assemble the top half by hot gluing the sides together (overlapping about a quarter inch). Add dab of hot glue to the tab of top piece and fold into the tube you just made. It’s not...
He Made Faux Porcelain Ornaments ( sans spray paint )

He Made Faux Porcelain Ornaments ( sans spray paint )

Andrea really wanted me to make her some of those trendy faux porcelain ornaments that you’ve probably seen floating around the blogosphere. All of the tutorials I’ve read call for spray paint or spray primer which unfortunately we do not have the space for….. I couldn’t let my crafty girl down so I came up with an alternative solution that we could complete in our tiny condo space without the fumes or mess of spray paint. They turned out quite nice if I do say so myself. All you need is some leftover white house paint, small eyelet screws, string and some plastic animals. I used some leftover Behr Eggshell paint and some Target dollar bin farm animals (Small enough to shimmy into a paint can). The trick to this project is having proper hanging racks, a mixing/drowning stick and about a half gallon of paint left in a gallon paint can (enough to dunk your toys). I used Andrea’s ornament hangers and a craft dowel to drown my animals in the paint (illustrated in the photos below). Andrea started screaming “Artax, Artax, Artax noooo!” I gave her a strange look and continued to drown my horse in the paint…… Then she was like “Neverending Story DUH!” and so Artax comes out white, which was his color in the movie before drowning in the swamp of sadness…. If you aren’t getting our Neverending story reference then click on this link to the Youtube clip but be warned it makes grown women cry….. If you weren’t paying attention then here are the basics: 1) Drown your animals in paint (...
